About us
Dave Allen started Practical PR in 1993, prior to which he was a journalist and editor with Emap for 12 years. He started Practical PR because his experience as a journalist was that much PR is ill-informed, badly targeted and rarely followed through. Practical PR specialises in IT and Engineering PR.
A lot of PR is too ambitious and too expensive - we confine ourselves to editorial targeting for news, news analysis, features, product reviews and case studies, and we keep it simple and cost-effective. The best opportunities for a company in pursuit of press coverage are developed by persistent and consistent PR contact with journalists over a period of months and years.
Some client opinions
"We have found in our dealings with Practical PR that they are helpful and extremely tenacious when dealing with media organisations. They have achieved the goals we set for them in a very short space of time. The technical aspects of drilling are well presented and they have successfully brought Centek’s products to the forefront of media attention. Without the professionalism of Practical PR we would not have achieved the results that we are currently enjoying, including an unprecedented 10,000 visitors to our website in one month alone," Cliff Berry, Centek Limited.
“Practical PR has been enthusiastic and professional in helping GRL publicise its news and customer success stories, and we have been delighted with the results which have helped us present an upbeat view of GRL to a wider audience. This has helped raised market awareness of the company and we now get regular feedback from new and established customers about articles they have seen in the press,” Dr Jason Tisdall, General Robotics Limited.
"Practical PR quickly acquired a detailed understanding of our needs and our company. They enjoy a close relationship with the journalists, and are regarded by the journalists we know, as informed and prepared to put in the extra effort to provide a journalist with whatever he or she needs to complete a story. As a result they have considerably increased our press coverage," Geoff Sutcliffe, SDRC.
"Practical PR provides a straightforward approach to PR, which concentrates on getting the right information, to the right journalists, at the right time. And it shows in the results. They get close to the journalists by understanding the needs of the technology and business press, and by demonstrating a genuine interest in the technologies and their benefits.
"Dave Allen, in particular, brings to bear an ex-journalist's knowledge of what editors are looking for, which helps us in proactively developing feature opportunities with him. They know which journalist is interested in which kind of article and can tailor stories accordingly. They work hard for their money and have contributed value to our business. I have no hesitation in recommending Practical PR," Roch Maleki, Eurobenefits.
"Practical PR brings a genuinely practical approach to PR, combining competitive fees, with a conscientious and informed approach that wins the respect of both clients and journalists alike. We were highly satisfied with the work Practical PR carried out for us, over nearly five years, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to any organization looking for Technology PR," Rachael Dalton-Taggart, PlanetCAD.
"David Allen demonstrates his ability to translate technical jargon into a language that both the media and the customer can understand, and he continually comes up with new ideas for communication pieces and ways to increase coverage in the B2B media. David's approach is researched, creative and targeted and he is the most pro-active PR executive I have ever worked with. His relationship with the news editors and feature writers is such, that he can negotiate column space as if it were 'advertising'! I have no hesitation in recommending Practical PR." Sue Bertram, Docucorp.
